Living outside the box

Hello, I’m Andy Visi Kartika from Indonesia. I’m in the 3rd year of the Ph.D. course at the Department of Microbiology
The Shimane Univ’s program I enrolled in is run by experts in infection-associated cancers, especially caused by Epstein-Barr virus and Helicobacter pylori. By spending time in their lab, I have learned about various research protocols involving growing cells, gene editing, molecular detection, and special staining as well. In addition, they introduced me to some applications which were new for me. Writing a scientific paper is also quite challenging. My supervisor taught me how to do a critical review on good published papers and we discussed it in a weekly meeting. In addition, I also learn how to manage a research laboratory. Hard work, patience, consistency, and critical thinking are needed. But all the effort will be well worth it when it comes to good results and publication.
A PhD’s student is a human being with an additional purpose to produce a reliable research paper so one can graduate. In order to be productive, I need a comfortable atmosphere, and it is provided here in Izumo. It serves me with peace, quiet, cleanliness, and a secure environment. At first, I felt scared because I was different. I was afraid that people wouldn’t accept me since I am a Muslim, wearing a veil, with a different skin color, different language, etc. Fortunately, people here are friendly and respect each other. In fact, some communities invite me to join their activities. It helps me to adapt to the cultures and the neighborhood as well. They accept me for what I am. I live peacefully, feel safe, and am not afraid of being mistreated. The city also has well-conserved wild nature. By enjoying its beautiful greeneries, I feel relaxed, and released from stress after experiencing hectic days doing experiments. Nonetheless, the living cost is relatively cheaper when compared to other cities in Japan. A perfect combination that is suitable for those who have no scholarship and a limited budget, but still can achieve good education and experiences.
Lastly, I would like to say to those who are interested in studying as a Ph.D. or Master’s student at Shimane University, which I believe will be one of the 500 best universities in the world soon, “Remember that limitation is only in your head and to love what you are doing. If you work hard enough, with God willing, the results will never betray you”.
