2. Elucidation of leaky gut syndrome and the discovery of therapeutic targeut

Leakly gut syndrome (LGS) is a wide range of serious chronic diseases caused by a leaky gut. Intestinal mucosa regulates the intestinal permeability that absorbs small molecules less than 500Da. Since the molecular size of bacterial pathogen and its toxin are larger than 500Da, the transfer of these pathogen and toxin are blocked in healthy condition. In the patient with LGS, the intestinal barrier dysfunction exhibits the permeability of several pathogen, toxin, and antigen, and then these factors initiate systemic immune reaction. Thus the possibility of LGS-dependent mechanism of food allergies, diabetes, lupus, and multiple sclerosis has been suggested. In this project, we have investigated the mechanisms and pathogenesis of LGS, and try to identify the therapeutic targets.
