Mesenchymal stem cells exist in bone marrow and several tissues in the body including bone, cartilage, and fat, and have differentiation potency. However, their configuration and behavior have not yet been made clear. Our department has established a technology that separates high-purity mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow of mice and humans. Also, carrying out a comprehensive analysis of the gene cluster specifically expressed in the obtained high-purity mesenchymal stem cells, we can identify the functional molecule involved in the maintenance of undifferentiation in stem cells, and using the expression regulation, express fluorescent protein, and manufacture transgenic animals to visualize MSC. Through these varied approaches, we endeavor to elucidate the function and dynamic state of mesenchymal stem cells in the adult body. Furthermore, through cooperation with the clinical research group, with a view to applying the basic to the clinical, we carry out cell treatment for patients of achondroplasia and are aiming for a high-level translational research that will be recognized as world-class.
