Internal Medicine I

Research Themes

In the Department of Internal Medicine 1, we are focusing on the following four major research topics

  • Diabetic complication research primarily focusing on kidney complications.
  • Disruption of bone metabolism in the systemic endocrine/metabolic diseases.
  • The biology of Cancer in Diabetes.
  • Exploration of the pathogenesis and novel therapeutic strategy in Preeclampsia.

Details

  1. Regarding the research focusing on kidney complications surrounding Diabetes, we have set out to investigate into the molecule responsible for systemic organ damage including that concerning the cardio-renal connection.
  2. For the osteometabolic and endocrine/ metabolic disorders, we have initiated basic research on not only the correlation with clinical biomarkers, but also are conducting analyses on molecular mechanisms of local and systemic hormone regulation.
  3. For the relationship between Diabetes and Cancer, we are conducting analyses paying particular attention to the connection between the complex regulatory network and metabolic dysfunction in the Cancer microenvironment.
  4. Preeclampsia is a devastating complication of pregnancy. We have reported the role of catechol metabolism defects and a potential deficiency in the placental renin-regulated transcription factor in the pathogenesis of Preeclampsia. Our goal is to target these pathogenic mechanisms and explore novel therapeutic strategies to combat Preeclampsia.
