Overview

Our department promotes basic, clinical, and community-based research focusing on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and aging. By leveraging the unique characteristics of Shimane Prefecture, a region with a rapidly aging population, we aim to contribute to healthy longevity.

In basic research, we investigate kidney aging and systemic metabolic dysfunction, focusing on NAD metabolism and mitochondrial function. Using genetically modified animal models and molecular biological approaches, we also study how adipocytes regulate kidney and metabolic function to identify novel mechanisms and therapeutic targets in adipose-kidney crosstalk.

In clinical research, we use the Long term eGFR plot (LTEP), an electronic health record-based tool that visualizes long-term changes in kidney function. Our studies examine CKD progression and prognosis based on the eGFR slope and evaluate whether visualization of kidney function improves CKD literacy and supports behavioral change. We also conduct multidimensional studies of centenarians in Shimane, including lifestyle, genetic, metabolomic, and gut microbiome analyses, to clarify the determinants of healthy longevity.

In community-based research, we collaborate with medical institutions across Shimane to assess kidney replacement therapies, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation, as well as conservative kidney management. We seek to translate our findings into earlier detection and prevention of CKD progression, patient-centered treatment choices, and reduced regional disparities in kidney care, while developing a model of nephrology care that supports healthy longevity.
