◆Message from the professor ◆History ◆Staff introduction
The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology, in the Faculty of Medicine at Shimane University, is 1) to provide advanced ophthalmic medical treatment in the San-in medical area 2) to pursue new findings for future ophthalmic medical research and 3) to teach and train highly competent medical professionals who will contribute to future ophthalmic medical education. It is my endeavor to be sincere when faced with societal medical requests and then to produce the best medical treatments possible. In addition, it is my belief that the above 2) medical research and 3) medical training and education may possibly lend themselves to more future-oriented efforts than even to 1) medical treatment. I think especially education is the most creative future investment as we can produce medical professionals who will be able to adapt to the requests from a constantly changing society and/or we can produce the necessary human resources that can achieve much more than what is limited to commonsense. Our department has the responsibility to maintain the present quality of medicine, and in addition we are developing a team environment that allows doctors, researchers, and vision trainers to feel like they belong to our department along with medical interns and medical students who can share in the “dream” for the future of medical care. I will continue to pursue these activities to in order to protect the “visibility” of our region in the world.

Dr. Tomoichi Setogawa, from Tottori University, arrived at Shimane Medical University in 1979 as the first professor in the newly created Department of Ophthalmology. At that time all medical staff in Department of Ophthalmology at Shimane Medical University were originally from Tottori University. Their clinical research had been conducted focusing on diabetic retinopathy.
In 1998, Dr. Akihiro Ohira from Nagasaki University arrived as the second professor in our department. The clinical research conducted focused on themes such as oxidative stress in eyes for both clinical studies and basic science research.
In April 2018, Dr. Masaki Tanito who graduated from Shimane Medical University, became the third professor in our department. Dr. Tanito took over the department building on what the previous professors created and is continuing to work hard in offering clinical treatments, medical professional training and education, and new medical research opportunities.
