My Journey as an S-SPRING Recipient

My name is Arief Abdurrazaq Dharma, but I prefer to be called Acha. I am a doctoral student in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Graduate School of Medical Research at Shimane University. I am truly honoured and grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the JST Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation: SPRING 2026 Program, through the SU Capacity Building Project towards a Sustainable Society (S-SPRING).

This support is very meaningful to me as an international doctoral student living in Japan with my family. It provides financial support and strong encouragement and motivation to help me continue growing as a young researcher. This opportunity will enable me to focus more deeply on my doctoral studies and research activities. My research is in ophthalmology, specifically glaucoma and vision science. Through my doctoral studies, I hope to develop my research skills, expand my scientific perspective and contribute to advancing medical science and sustainable healthcare in the future. I am also very grateful for the opportunity to study and conduct research in Japan, where I can learn from exceptional researchers and in advanced research environments, surrounded by a culture of sincerity and kindness. For an international student like myself, these experiences are invaluable for my academic and personal development.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Masaki Tanito, for his continuous guidance and support. I would also like to thank Kaidzu-sensei and all the staff and members of the Department of Ophthalmology at Shimane University for their kindness, ncouragement and assistance throughout my doctoral studies. Their support has motivated me greatly to continue working hard and to make meaningful contributions as a doctoral student and future clinician-scientist.
